cauvery is dying - this was the soft headline in hindu.

cauvery river is a huge bone of contention between tamilnadu and karnataka. but once cauvery enters tamilnadu, all we do is to literally rape the river.

it starts right at mettur when cauvery river enters tamilnadu. toxic factories that make aluminum, pvc and other dangerous chemicals cooly let effulents into cauvery.

after that cauvery gets slammed big time as flows in erode as the above article points out.
right from mettur to nagapattinam, hundred of polluting industries rape river cauvery. on top of it, noyyal and bhavani rivers which are heavily polluted rivers also merge with cauvery.

from the article,
As part of industrialisation, the Government encouraged the formation of new industries — many of which caused pollution, he said.
For instance, hundreds of dyeing and hosiery units were opened in Tirupur. These units let off untreated effluents into the Noyyal river, which in turn reached the Orathupalayam reservoir — affecting thousands of acres.

the danger is that cauvery river water is also mixed with veeranam- which is a water source for the chennai people.

indeed india's developedment is toxic and unhealthy for most of its public and the money coming out of this developedment benefits a very few elite in urban areas who can purchase mineral water.

and indeed tamilians whose great culture evolved from its great rivers can take huge pride that all their rivers are nothing but sewage and industrial pollution. way to go towards developedment, i guess.
